Well, courtesy of Mrs W, the brakes are now bled and are as good as they are going to get for now. I have a sneaking suspicion that they will require bleeding again come MOT time.
The whole process went swimmingly apart from the lack of a 1/4" spanner! I only had metric stuff so will have to acquire an imperial spanner just for this job.
